
They may be perfect for setting the right mood but candles can also harm your health. A new US study shows paraffin wax candles, made from petroleum, contribute to air pollution inside your home and can worsen the symptoms of indoor allergies or respiratory irritation. Researchers suggest the use of candles made from beeswax or soy which produce little pollution and are better for your family’s health. They also recommended candles be used only in a well-ventilated room.
BEER FOR BONES
Here’s a good reason to enjoy a glass of brew once in a while. Spanish researchers say women who drink moderate amounts of beer have a higher bone density than nondrinkers. They attribute this to beer’s natural compounds. That’s good news considering osteoporosis is a common problem in post-menopausal women. But don’t overdo it - drinking more than two units of alcohol a day can be harmful.
FIGHT CANCER WITH POPCORN
Whole grains are a rich source of cancer-fighting antioxidants called polyphenols and popcorn and breakfast cereals high in fibre - especially those with raisins - top this list. Polyphenols are also found in the seeds and skin of fruit and vegetables.
