YOU advice columnist Dr Louise has these tips for cutting back.
DON’T GO ON A SPREE
It’s a short-term pick-me-up and will increase your anxiety in the long run.
FIGHT FEELING DEPRIVED
Don’t be miserable if you can’t afford expensive food; instead enjoy delicious homemade meals.
SELL IF YOU HAVE TO
Keeping up with an unaffordable bond can cause health problems. Instead you can rent.
DON’T OVERBURDEN YOURSELF
Before you take on additional jobs look for another solution.
BE POSITIVE ABOUT YOUR JOB
It’s no time to resign. Companies are financially stretched too - be patient.
LEARN TO HAVE FUN
Don’t sit at home and mope because you’re convinced you need money to have fun.
KEEP THE KIDS IN LINE
Don’t feel guilty when you can’t afford something they want. Saying “no” doesn’t make you a bad parent.
BE HONEST
Be open with friends and tell them when you’re in a financial fix. They can help - and later you can return the favour.
SIMPLICITY IS GOOD
Use tough times to your advantage,
- You find out who your real friends are. When the going gets tough real friends stick by you and care.
- You learn to be creative. Finding innovative ways to save money, cutting expenses and still ensuring family fun will make you proud.
- You rediscover simple pleasures. Sit and listen to the birds. Discover how tasty homemade soup is. Release stress by taking pleasure in talking to a friend.
- Difficult times are part of the circle of life and easier times will follow. Get through the tough times by taking one day at a time.
