AND MORE HEALTH TIPS
Summer is here and you can’t wait to hit the beach, armed with loads of sunscreen. But what about protection for your eyes? A survey by Transitions Optical shows 85 per cent of South Africans are unaware of the damage long hours of sun exposure can cause to their eyes. You run the risk of developing cataracts and even cancer of the eyelids if you don’t protect your eyes. A good pair of sunglasses will screen your eyes against dangerous ultraviolet rays. Ensure you invest in sunglasses that block between 99 and 100 per cent of the sun’s UVA and UVB rays and wear a hat or cap for extra protection.
RED WINE GOOD FOR YOUR LUNGS
We all know red wine in moderation can be beneficial to your heart. Now a new study shows it also protects your lungs. According to a US study smokers who drank only one or two glasses of red wine daily reduced their chances of developing lung cancer by 60 per cent. Red wine contains the antioxidant resveratrol which is good for both your heart and prevention of lung cancer.
LAID-BACK LAVENDER
Looking for an affordable tranquilliser? Put a few drops of lavender oil on a handkerchief and sniff it for five minutes when you feel anxious or tense. A Japanese study shows inhaling the vapours reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
