Kids and exam results: coping with disappointment

It’s that time of year when stress levels among youngsters and their parents skyrocket in anticipation of exam results. YOU trauma columnist Debbi Rozowsky has these tips for coping if the news is bad.

STAY POSITIVE
Celebrate your child, not the exam results. We should never shame our kids because they internalise it and become self-destructive.

OPEN DOORS
Poor results don’t spell future failure. Tell your kids about the opportunities ahead of them rather than those they might have lost.

DON’T JUDGE
Don’t compare your children with one another. They have individual strengths and aptitudes.

DON’T BLAME
What’s done is done. Look to the future and encourage.
